BHS Approval

Rumbolds Farm is an approved livery yard. Below is details of the BHS approval scheme:

The British Horse Society Livery Yard Approval Scheme

In 1961 the British Horse Society started a system of approving riding schools. Although riding schools had to be licensed by their local councils it was felt that this licensing only covered basic standards, and the BHS developed a scheme where by other issues, such as welfare, instruction and safety standards, were taken into account.

The scheme proved to be very popular and there are now over 700 BHS approved schools in the UK and abroad. In recent years the number of livery yards in the UK has grown dramatically. Unlike riding schools, livery yards do not need to be licensed which can mean that even basic standards are not always met. The BHS looked at ways of encouraging improved standards, and with the backing of British Equine Veterinary Association, the International League for the Protection of Horses, the RSPCA, the SSPCA and the Home of Rest for Horses, launched its new Approved Livery Yard scheme in July 2002.

The scheme aims to provide some kind of ‘regulation’ to livery yards. All cat and dog boarding kennels have to be inspected and licensed by law and although the livery yard scheme is voluntary, it will provide a means for livery yards to prove a certain level of competence.

The aims of the scheme are to ensure the level of care and facilities provided by a livery yard are of an acceptable standard. It will also provide guidelines for new yards opening up, and will help to improve welfare standards for horses all over Britain.

Since its launch in the summer of 2002, the BHS has sent out over 2000 information packs. Thirty applicants are currently being processed, and already sixty six establishments have completed and joined the scheme.

The BHS has high hopes for the scheme, which seeks to provide a way for horse owners to be able to choose a livery yard and be assured that it will be reputable. For more information visit www.bhs.org.uk or contact the BHS Approvals Department,
